Introduction to Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, frequently referred to as the Brazilian Micro Sword, is a staple in the aquascaping hobby. Originating from South America, it grows along the banks of rivers and streams, often partially or fully submerged. It is highly valued for its dense, grass-like appearance, which is ideal for creating a natural-looking carpet in the aquarium.
Growth and Care
This plant is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for beginners. While it can survive in low light conditions without CO2 injection, providing medium to high light along with supplemental CO2 will significantly increase its growth rate and encourage a much denser, more compact carpet. It propagates through runners (stolons) that spread across the substrate.
Aquascaping Application
As a classic foreground plant, Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is perfect for the front of the aquarium. To plant, it is best to separate the pot into small portions and plant them a few centimeters apart in the substrate. Over time, the runners will connect these portions, forming a continuous, lush green lawn that provides excellent shelter for bottom-dwelling fish and shrimp.
