Introduction
Hygrophila serpyllum is a beautiful, low-growing aquatic plant originating from Asia, specifically endemic to the Western Ghats of India. Unlike many of its taller Hygrophila cousins, this species exhibits a creeping growth pattern that makes it exceptionally well-suited for the foreground of an aquascape.
Growth and Care
To achieve the dense, carpet-like growth seen in optimal conditions, Hygrophila serpyllum requires medium to high lighting and a steady supply of CO2 injection. Under lower light, it may grow more sparsely and reach slightly higher towards the light source. Regular pruning encourages lateral shoots, helping to maintain a compact, bushy appearance.
Aquascaping Application
Thanks to its vibrant light green foliage and small, rounded leaves, this plant offers a fantastic textural contrast when placed against darker rocks or wood. It bridges the gap perfectly between the very front of the tank and the midground, providing a natural transition zone in nature-style aquariums.
