Cryptocoryne x willisii (Willis's Cryptocoryne)

Introduction

Cryptocoryne x willisii, formerly often erroneously sold as Cryptocoryne nevillii, is a beautiful and highly resilient rosette plant native to the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It is a naturally occurring hybrid that has become a staple in the aquarium hobby due to its forgiving nature, making it highly recommended for beginners.

Growth and Care

This Cryptocoryne species is characterized by its relatively slow to medium growth rate and its ability to adapt to a wide variety of water parameters. It thrives in low to medium light conditions and does not require supplemental CO2 injection, though the addition of nutrients and CO2 will encourage faster, more robust growth. Like many Cryptocorynes, it may experience 'crypt melt' when first introduced to a new environment, but the roots will quickly send out new, adapted leaves if left undisturbed.

Aquascaping Application

In the aquarium, Cryptocoryne x willisii is best utilized in the foreground or midground. As it matures, it sends out runners to form dense, bushy groups that create a natural, grassy appearance. Its bright green, lanceolate leaves provide a beautiful contrast against darker hardscape materials like driftwood and lava rock, making it a versatile plant for both nature-style and jungle aquascapes.
