Neocaridina davidi originates from freshwater streams and pools in East Asia. The Rainbow Mix comprises various color morphs all belonging to the same species. In the wild, their ancestors were generally translucent or brownish for camouflage. Selective breeding by hobbyists has produced the distinct color patterns found in these aquarium strains.

Water Parameters

These shrimp are highly adaptable to various water conditions. They thrive in established, cycled tanks with stable parameters. While they tolerate a wide range of pH and temperature, sudden fluctuations should be avoided to prevent stress. Providing a well-filtered environment with regular, small water changes helps maintain optimal health.

Diet and Feeding

As natural scavengers, these shrimp graze on biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter. They readily accept high-quality commercial shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and frozen foods. Providing a varied diet ensures they receive necessary minerals for proper growth and health, especially during the critical molting process.

Tank Mates and Behavior

Neocaridina shrimp are peaceful and best kept in groups. Due to their small size, they are vulnerable to predation. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful invertebrates like snails or very small, non-aggressive fish. Heavily planted tanks with moss and hiding spots are essential for their security and for the survival of shrimplets.

Molting and Breeding

Growth occurs through molting, where the shrimp sheds its exoskeleton. Stable water hardness is vital for successful molts. Breeding is relatively easy; females carry eggs beneath their abdomen until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults.
