A curated list of the most visually stunning aquariums from the 2023-2024 aquascaping season, as judged by the acclaimed aquascaper, Josh Sim. This compilation offers insights into the latest trends and techniques in the world of aquatic plant arrangement

With the revelation of IAPLC last weekend, i think we have seen 90% of all the layouts in 2024. Therefore, I would like to do something fun and pick my best tanks in various categories (combination of different contests):

I would like to share - in my humble opinion - the best Hardscape of 2024

Best Forest

Surprisingly, there arent too many forest layout this year as compared to few years back, but these outstanding forest layouts still took home some remarkable placements (including 2 GPs) in the few contests already announced. This shows that forest layout will always have a place in aquascaping contest - if you do it right!

Best Underwater

It is not a very well-kept secret that i am an underwater guy in recent years. So i am very happy to see many great layouts with underwater feeling in 2024 and some high rankers too. I picked 8 of my favorite....here they are:

Best NA - Rock

I didnot really count but i believe rock layouts contributed about 30% of total submission and out of this number, approximately half of it are NA-Rock. Not a big number of entries with this style but there are still quite some remarkable NA-Rock works this year. These are my 6 favorites

Best NA - Wood

This group is tough because sometime it is not easy to say if a certain wood layouts are "NA" or not NA. You can very well argue that tank #5 and #6 are not NA...but this is my list so i don't care. Here are my choices of Best NA-Wood Layout this year:

Best Execution

Best execution here means: good usage of plants, great details, clever use of light & shadow, good photography skills etc....in short, the best presentation of your layout in the final photo.

In this category, we are not purely looking at "aquascaping" skill anymore, but more maintenance skill, plant knowledge and most importantly, the artistic sense of a creator.

Best Innovative Idea

It is not easy to have totally new and original ideas after so many years of development in the hobby, this is understandable. But if we pay attention and appreciate the smaller details, we can still find innovative and fun element every year. This is what kept the hobby interesting and bring smiles to our face

It was really difficult to choose the best aquarium. In the first 10-20 selections, the realisations were all very close, and each had very good qualities, often in very different styles. But this one caught my eye at first glance.

This is the world's largest and most prestigious aquascaping competition, organized by ADA of Japan. It's a stage to honor artistic aquascapes and a playground for artists from all over the world to showcase their talent, creativity, and passion.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Forward and Backward Flow - Yi Ye / China - IAPLC 2022

The work expresses the swirling flow of water by using several thin pieces of driftwood. The driftwood looks like the roots of a tree washed by the water, creating a successful fusion of formative beauty and a sense of nature. The shadows of the protruding stones look like the entrance to a cave, adding variety to the aquascape.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Nescente de utinga - Marreira Júnior / Brazil - IAPLC 2022

The work recreates a distinctive natural landscape with bent driftwood and reddish-brown stones. The work depicts a narrow stream of cosmetic sand flowing from the center and right side of the aquascape and merging in the foreground. The aquatic plants are impressive and fit this unique landscape.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Deep Connection - Joao Pinheiro / Portugal - IAPLC 2022

It is a Nature Aquarium style work with a large piece of driftwood as the main element. The ferns covering the driftwood and the dense foliage of Anubias and Cryptocoryne give a sense of the passage of time. The red floating leaves are also nice accents.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Green Valley - Katsuki Tanaka / Japan - IAPLC 2022

This work emphasizes perspective through a painterly technique. The leaves of the ferns planted between the stones are aligned in the same direction to express the flow of water. In addition, the use of brightly colored stem plants in the background creates an aquascape with depth and a sense of freedom.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - The place of Gameleira - Renan Selingardi do Amaral / Brazil - IAPLC 2022

Layout materials in the composition of this work is very well-arranged, and the aquascape has a natural feeling. In the foreground, two large driftwood pieces are set up on the top forming a sense of stability as they are placed facing each other.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Valley of Shadows - Marcelo Takeno / Brazil - IAPLC 2022

Placing in the top 100 |APLC rankings is quite an admirable feat, and earning the Grand Prize is a truly impressive and rare accomplish-ment, rising to the top of so many fine compositions.
Best Aquarium Selection by Each Judge - Dawnlight - Xudong Zheng / China - IAPLC 2022

In evaluation for the APLC 2022, I decided to give my Best Aquarium to the work called "Dawnlight" . This year, this layout was a haunt- ingly beatiful and peaceful aquascape for me. Evaluating this work as the best, I was very happy that it represents the style that shaped the IAPLC competition.
[TheStoriesOfTop7] Place of origin - Zhemin Fan / China - IAPLC 2023

This year's Grand Prix was awarded to the work depicting the nature of a mountainous virgin forest. At first glance, the layout may seem plain, but the balance of the composition and the expression of perspective are excellent and combined with the expression of a sense of nature based on the muted green tones, it is an interesting work that is pleasant to look at and makes you feel as if you are actually in nature.
[TheStoriesOfTop7] Longing - Gang Zhao / China - IAPLC 2023

This work, which skillfully combined stones and driftwood to express a deeply gouged valley, won the Gold Prize following the Grand Prix. The perspective is beautifully expressed by taking advantage of the characteristics of this aquarium, which is deeper than a typical W120cm aquarium.

This work, with its impactful and unique driftwood, won the first Silver Prize. The gap between the small rocky peak at the far end and the large piece of driftwood boldly placed at the very front effectively expresses a sense of perspective.
[TheStoriesOfTop7] Red alert - Nobphacha Yimyou / Thailand - IAPLC 2023

The red leaves of the water lilies make a strong impression in this work, which won the second Silver Prize. The layout is as if we are looking up at the surface of the water from the bottom of a pond with highly transparent water, and the symmetrical composition is also effective in this layout.
