Comments from Mr. Albert Connelly, Jr. (U.S.A.)
Placing in the top 100 |APLC rankings is quite an admirable feat, and earning the Grand Prize is a truly impressive and rare accomplishment, rising to the top of so many fine compositions. I truly feel the entry "Valley of Shadows" is an achievement of the highest order in the art of aquascaping. The balance between light and dark is sub-lime, with the brightness of the plant life and open areas complemented by the darker textures of the wood and stone. The open area to the right of center is perfectly placed, and the sense of depth effected by the hardscape's framework, subtle pathway of cosmetic sand, and planting arrangement is expertly rendered. A foremost consideration for an lAPLC layout, on top of being an artful aquas-cape, is that it should be a healthy habitat for aquatic life, a suitable underwater environment for the fish and invertebrates living within. And those fish should be chosen well, selected in type and number for the size, ecology, and impression of the work. "Valley of Shad-ows" has a wonderful selection of fish, a mixed school of tetras moving naturally along its length and blending well with each other. Their bright blue, red, and orange hues are set off wonderfully against the color and texture of the plants, standing out as living wels sparkling as they glide through the water column. I sense si- "Valley of Shadows" a master's practiced eye, informed by the sensibilities and artistry of the master himself, Takashi Amano, sensei for all of time for those who practice the art of the aquatic plant layout.
