Anubias barteri var. 'Coffeifolia' (Coffeefolia Anubias)

Description

Anubias barteri var. 'Coffeifolia' is a stunning cultivated variety of the popular Anubias barteri, known for its distinctive and highly ornamental foliage. The leaves are typically dark green, oval to lanceolate, and feature a striking bullate or 'hammered' texture, giving them a unique, almost quilted appearance. New leaves often emerge with a reddish or coppery hue, gradually maturing to a deep green. This robust plant grows from a creeping rhizome, making it an excellent choice for attaching to hardscape elements.

Planting & Care

Like all Anubias species, 'Coffeifolia' is incredibly hardy and undemanding, making it perfect for beginners. It thrives in low to medium light conditions and does not require CO2 supplementation, though it will benefit from it with slightly faster (but still slow) growth. The most crucial aspect of planting Anubias is to ensure the rhizome is not buried in the substrate, as this can lead to rot. Instead, attach it to rocks or driftwood using fishing line or super glue until its roots naturally anchor. Regular liquid fertilization can support its health and vibrant coloration.

Aquascaping Tips

Anubias barteri var. 'Coffeifolia' is a versatile plant that can be used effectively in various aquascape styles. Its medium height and distinctive texture make it ideal for the middleground, providing a focal point or a strong textural contrast against finer-leaved plants. It excels when attached to driftwood or lava rock, mimicking its natural epiphytic growth. Its slow growth rate means minimal pruning is required, and its robust leaves are generally resistant to herbivorous fish, making it a fantastic choice for cichlid tanks or other setups with plant-munching inhabitants.
