The Blue Punk is a captive-bred variant of Microgeophagus ramirezi, a dwarf cichlid native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. In the wild, these fish inhabit warm, slow-moving, and acidic waters. The specific Blue Punk line has been selectively bred in captivity to emphasize brilliant blue scales and specific head coloration, which are not typically found in wild populations.
Behavior and Tank Requirements
These cichlids are generally peaceful but can become territorial during spawning. A minimum tank size of 75 liters is recommended for a pair. The aquarium should be well-planted with driftwood and smooth stones to create hiding spots. Maintaining high water quality is critical, as they are sensitive to nitrates and fluctuations in water parameters.
Diet and Feeding
Blue Punk Cichlids are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. High-quality micro-pellets or flakes should be supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Providing a diverse nutritional profile helps maintain their intense coloration and overall immune health.
Compatibility and Breeding
They are suitable for community tanks with other small, peaceful species like tetras or corydoras. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or fast-moving fish that may outcompete them for food. Breeding occurs on flat surfaces like stones or leaves. Both parents are typically attentive, guarding the eggs and fry, though breeding success depends heavily on maintaining ideal soft, acidic water conditions.
