Hyphessobrycon bentosi (White Fin Ornate Tetra)

Overview

The White Fin Ornate Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon bentosi, is a highly sought-after variant in the aquarium hobby. The "DNZ" designation often associated with this fish in the European trade stands for "Deutsche Nachzucht," indicating high-quality German captive-bred specimens. These captive-bred lines are exceptionally hardy, adaptable, and boast intensified coloration, making them a brilliant addition to any freshwater community tank.

Distribution and Habitat

In the wild, the standard Hyphessobrycon bentosi is native to the slow-moving tributaries, floodplain lakes, and forested creeks of the Amazon basin in South America. They thrive in blackwater environments rich in tannins from decaying plant matter, which naturally lowers the pH and softens the water. While the White Fin variant is predominantly captive-bred and well-adapted to standard tap water, mimicking their natural habitat can encourage their most vibrant colors.

Description of White Fin Ornate Tetra

Body shape:

They possess a classic deep, laterally compressed body typical of many robust tetra species. This diamond-like shape gives them a substantial presence despite their relatively small size.

Color:

The body exhibits a beautiful translucent, rosy-silver to pinkish hue. Subtle iridescent scales can catch the light, while the gill plates often show a deeper reddish blush.

Barbels:

Like all characins, they do not possess barbels.

Snout:

They have a short, rounded snout with a small, terminal mouth designed for snapping up micro-invertebrates in the water column.

Eyes:

The eyes are relatively large in proportion to the head, featuring a dark pupil surrounded by a silvery or slightly golden iris.

Fins:

The fins are the defining feature of this variant. The tall dorsal fin features a prominent black blotch and is capped with a stark, bright white tip. The pelvic and anal fins are infused with a deep red coloration and are also striking for their bright white tips. Males typically boast longer, more extended dorsal and anal fins than females.

The Tail:

The caudal (tail) fin is deeply forked. While mostly transparent, the upper and lower lobes often display distinct reddish tints that complement the rest of their finnage.

Temper

This is a remarkably peaceful species. While males may occasionally engage in mock-sparring displays to establish a pecking order or impress females—flaring their fins and swimming side-by-side—these interactions are harmless and rarely result in any actual injury.

Sociality

They are a highly social, schooling fish. To ensure they feel secure and display their best natural behaviors and colors, they must be kept in groups of at least six, though larger schools of ten or more are highly recommended.

Activity

White Fin Ornate Tetras are active, mid-level swimmers. They will spend the majority of their day darting around the middle strata of the aquarium, exploring plants, and interacting with their conspecifics.

Keeping and Caring for White Fin Ornate Tetra

Tank size:

A minimum tank size of 60 liters (about 15 gallons) is required to provide adequate swimming space for a small school, though larger tanks are always better for community setups.

Water Parameters:

Being captive-bred, they are quite adaptable, but they do best in conditions that somewhat replicate their ancestral Amazonian waters.

Temperature

They thrive in tropical temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).

pH

A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal, ideally kept between 5.5 and 7.5.

Hardness

They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (dGH) of 2 to 15.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Pristine water conditions are essential. Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm, and Nitrates should be maintained below 20 ppm through regular water changes.

Lighting

Dim to moderate lighting is preferred. Bright, intense lighting can wash out their colors and cause stress unless the tank is heavily shaded by plants.

Water flow

A gentle to moderate water flow is sufficient. They do not appreciate turbulent, fast-moving water.

Decorations and Plants

A heavily planted aquarium is ideal. Incorporate driftwood, botanical leaf litter (like Indian Almond leaves) to introduce tannins, and plenty of tall background plants and floating plants to provide shaded areas and hiding spots.

Diet

They are omnivorous and not fussy eaters. In the aquarium, they will readily accept high-quality dry foods such as micro-pellets and crushed flakes. To promote optimal health and coloration, supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

Some Feeding Tips

Feed them small amounts once or twice a day—only what they can completely consume within two to three minutes. Because they have small mouths, ensure the food particles are appropriately sized.

Breeding

Breeding the White Fin Ornate Tetra is a rewarding challenge. They are egg-scatterers and exhibit no parental care. To breed them, set up a dedicated spawning tank with very soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, and a substrate of marbles or fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss) where the eggs can fall out of reach. Condition the breeders with live foods, introduce them to the breeding tank, and remove the adults immediately after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry will hatch in 24-36 hours and require infusoria or specialized liquid fry food until they are large enough to eat baby brine shrimp.

Conclusion

The White Fin Ornate Tetra is a captivating, hardy, and peaceful fish that makes an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Their dynamic schooling behavior, combined with the striking contrast of their white-tipped fins against a planted backdrop, guarantees they will be a stunning focal point in any freshwater community aquarium.
