Overview

The Pea Puffer, scientifically known as Carinotetraodon travancoricus, is the smallest known species of pufferfish in the world. Often referred to as the Indian Dwarf Puffer or Pygmy Puffer, this fully freshwater species has taken the aquarium hobby by storm due to its inquisitive nature, unique swimming style, and distinct, expressive eyes.

Distribution and Habitat

Endemic to the Western Ghats of India, specifically in the states of Kerala and Karnataka, the Pea Puffer is naturally found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Their natural habitat is heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation and densely packed with aquatic plants, providing them with ample hiding spots and hunting grounds.

Description of Pea Puffer

Body shape:

They possess a club-shaped, relatively round body that tapers toward the tail, typical of the Tetraodontidae family, but on a miniature scale.

Color:

The base coloration is typically a golden-yellow to greenish hue, heavily mottled with dark brown or black irregular spots and patches, providing excellent camouflage in planted environments.

Barbels:

They do not possess barbels.

Snout:

They have a pointed snout with a small mouth containing four fused teeth (forming a beak), which they use to crush the shells of small invertebrates.

Eyes:

Their large, striking eyes can move independently of one another, giving them excellent binocular vision for hunting micro-prey.

Fins:

They have small, translucent pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins that flutter rapidly, allowing them to hover and maneuver with extreme precision.

The Tail:

The caudal fin is small and fan-shaped, often tucked or used for sudden bursts of speed when striking at prey.

Temper

Despite their diminutive size, Pea Puffers are known to be quite feisty and territorial. They are notorious fin-nippers and will not hesitate to attack fish much larger than themselves if they feel threatened or territorial.

Sociality

While they can be kept in small groups, they require heavily planted tanks to break lines of sight and establish individual territories. A ratio of one male to multiple females is recommended to reduce intraspecific aggression. They are generally best kept in a species-only aquarium.

Activity

They are highly active, diurnal hunters. You will often see them meticulously inspecting plant leaves and the substrate, hovering like tiny helicopters as they search for snails and small worms.

Keeping and Caring for Pea Puffer

Tank size:

A minimum of 20 liters (5 gallons) is required for a single specimen, though 40 liters (10 gallons) or more is highly recommended for a small group (e.g., 3-4 puffers).

Water Parameters:

Temperature

They thrive in tropical temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F - 82°F).

pH

The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.5 and 7.5.

Hardness

They prefer soft to moderately hard water, ideally between 4 and 10 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept as low as possible, ideally below 15 ppm, as they are very sensitive to poor water quality.

Lighting

Moderate lighting is preferred. Dimmer lighting or floating plants can help them feel more secure and encourage natural foraging behaviors.

Water flow

Water flow should be gentle. They are not strong swimmers against strong currents and prefer the still or slow-moving waters akin to their natural habitat.

Decorations and Plants

A heavily planted tank is an absolute must. Use a variety of dense background plants, mosses, and driftwood to create complex sightlines and abundant hiding spaces.

Diet

Pea Puffers are strict carnivores. Their diet should consist primarily of small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and blackworms. They are also famous for their appetite for pest snails (like bladder and ramshorn snails), which helps keep their beak-like teeth naturally filed down.

Some Feeding Tips

They rarely accept dry flakes or pellets. Feed them small portions once or twice a day, and use tweezers to offer frozen foods like bloodworms to ensure they are eating and to avoid fouling the water with uneaten food.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity is possible but challenging. They are egg-scatterers that usually spawn among fine-leaved plants like Java Moss. The male will chase the female into the vegetation where eggs and sperm are released. The parents offer no parental care and should be removed after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs.
