Pethia canius (Green Dwarf Barb)

Overview

The Green Dwarf Barb (Pethia canius) is an incredibly charming and active micro-fish. Due to their small size and peaceful nature, they are highly sought after by nano aquarium enthusiasts looking to add a splash of energetic life to their setups.

Distribution and Habitat

Native to the river basins of India and Bangladesh, they naturally inhabit slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters. These environments are often shaded by overhanging vegetation and rich in leaf litter, providing plenty of hiding spaces and natural food sources.

Description of Green Dwarf Barb

Image of gruene zwergbarbe pethia canius

Body shape:

They feature a compact, slightly deep-bodied yet proportionally elongated shape that is typical of small cyprinids.

Color:

Their coloration is a striking golden-silver base with a greenish iridescent sheen, distinctly marked by deep black blotches along their flanks.

Barbels:

Barbels are either extremely minute or entirely absent in this particular species.

Snout:

The snout is relatively short, blunt, and slightly rounded, perfectly adapted for picking micro-organisms from plant leaves.

Eyes:

They possess large eyes relative to their head size, featuring a prominent dark pupil surrounded by a highly reflective, golden-rimmed iris.

Fins:

The fins are mostly translucent, though the dorsal and pelvic fins often exhibit a yellowish or golden tint with subtle dark margins.

The Tail:

The caudal fin is deeply forked, clear, and allows for rapid, darting movements.

Temper

These barbs are exceptionally peaceful. However, they can be quite timid and easily stressed if kept alone or with overly boisterous tank mates.

Sociality

This is an obligate schooling fish. They should always be kept in groups of at least 8 to 10 individuals. A larger school ensures they feel secure and encourages them to display their best colors and natural behaviors.

Activity

They are very active and lively, spending most of their day darting around the middle and lower levels of the water column exploring their environment.

Keeping and Caring for Green Dwarf Barb

These barbs are generally hardy, but they require stable environmental conditions and pristine water quality to truly thrive and avoid disease.

Tank size:

A minimum of 10 gallons (approx. 40 liters) is recommended for a standard school, though larger is always better to provide adequate swimming space.

Water Parameters:

Consistency in water parameters is key to preventing stress in these small fish.

Temperature

20-25°C (68-77°F) is ideal for their long-term health.

pH

Keep the water slightly acidic to neutral, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5.

Hardness

They prefer soft to moderately hard water, ranging from 2-12 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be 0 ppm. Keep Nitrate strictly below 20 ppm through regular water changes and good tank maintenance.

Lighting

Moderate to dim lighting is preferred. This can be easily achieved by utilizing floating plants like Salvinia or Frogbit.

Water flow

A gentle to moderate water flow mimics their natural, slow-moving habitat without exhausting them.

Decorations and Plants

A dark substrate, dense live plantings (such as Cryptocoryne or Java Fern), and driftwood tangles will make them feel secure and bring out their vibrant greens and golds.

Diet

Omnivorous by nature, they readily accept high-quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like Daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp.

Some Feeding Tips

Due to their very small mouths, ensure all food is appropriately sized. It is best to feed them small amounts twice a day rather than one large meal to prevent bloating and water fouling.

Breeding

They are egg-scatterers that show no parental care. To breed them intentionally, set up a separate breeding tank with a mesh bottom or dense moss (like Java Moss). Condition the adults with high-quality live foods, and remove them immediately after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs.

Conclusion

The Green Dwarf Barb is a fantastic, energetic addition to any peaceful community or species-specific nano aquarium. With proper care, a healthy school will offer endless entertainment and a splash of natural beauty to your aquascape.
