Osteoglossum bicirrhosum (Golden Arowana)

Overview

The Golden Arowana variant of Osteoglossum bicirrhosum is a spectacular rarity in the aquarium hobby. While the typical Silver Arowana is well-known, this specific morph exhibits a stunning golden-yellow hue across its scales. Revered as a symbol of luck and prosperity in many cultures, it is a majestic, prehistoric-looking fish that commands attention in any large display. Due to its massive adult size and specific husbandry requirements, it is a species strictly suited for highly experienced aquarists with access to exceptionally large tanks.

Distribution and Habitat

The natural form of Osteoglossum bicirrhosum is native to the Amazon, Essequibo, and Oyapock river basins in South America. They thrive in slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, and swampy areas. As surface dwellers, they patrol the top layers of the water column, hunting for fish, insects, and even small animals near the water's edge. The golden variant is a selectively bred or naturally occurring rare morph of this species.

Description of Golden Arowana

Body shape:

They possess an elongated, flat, and ribbon-like body that is highly streamlined for sudden bursts of speed. The profile is distinctively prehistoric, tapering towards the tail.

Color:

Instead of the typical silver sheen, this rarity boasts a brilliant golden to yellow hue that shimmers under aquarium lighting, particularly noticeable on the large, distinct scales.

Barbels:

Two prominent, sensory barbels protrude from the tip of the lower jaw, which help the fish detect vibrations and prey on the water's surface.

Snout:

The mouth is large, oblique, and points sharply upward, perfectly adapted for snatching prey from the surface or leaping out of the water.

Eyes:

Large and positioned to look upward. In captivity, they are prone to a condition known as "drop-eye," where one or both eyes permanently look downward, often attributed to diet or looking down at the tank floor.

Fins:

The dorsal and anal fins are exceptionally long, running almost the entire posterior half of the body and nearly merging with the tail.

The Tail:

The caudal fin is relatively small and rounded in proportion to the massive body, acting as a rudder during swimming.

Temper

While generally peaceful towards fish that are too large to swallow, the Golden Arowana is a highly predatory species. It will readily consume any tank mate that can fit into its large mouth. They can sometimes be territorial towards other surface-dwelling species or other Arowanas.

Sociality

They are best kept as solitary centerpieces or in massive community tanks with robust, deep-bodied bottom or mid-water dwellers, such as large catfish, freshwater stingrays, or large, peaceful cichlids. Keeping multiple Arowanas together usually requires an enormous enclosure to disperse aggression.

Activity

This fish is constantly on the move, gracefully patrolling the upper stratum of the aquarium. They are notorious jumpers—in the wild, they leap from the water to catch insects and birds on low-hanging branches. A heavy, secure lid is absolutely mandatory.

Keeping and Caring for Golden Arowana

Tank size:

A bare minimum of 250 gallons is required for a single adult, though tanks of 300 to 500+ gallons with a large footprint (at least 3-4 times the length of the fish and wide enough for it to turn around comfortably) are highly recommended.

Water Parameters:

Arowanas are sensitive to poor water quality and require pristine conditions maintained through powerful filtration and massive, frequent water changes.

Temperature

Maintain a stable temperature between 24-28°C (75-82°F).

pH

They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.

Hardness

Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, ranging from 1 to 8 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept strictly below 20 ppm to prevent stress and disease.

Lighting

Moderate lighting is best. If the light is too intense, it can cause stress or contribute to the fish swimming at an angle.

Water flow

Gentle to moderate water flow is preferred, mimicking the slow-moving rivers of their natural habitat without overpowering them.

Decorations and Plants

The upper half of the tank must be kept completely clear of hardscape to allow unobstructed swimming. Bottom decorations like smooth driftwood and rocks are fine. Floating plants can be used to diffuse light, but ensure they do not impede the Arowana's swimming space.

Diet

They are obligate carnivores. In captivity, they should be fed a varied diet of high-quality floating pellets, crickets, mealworms, earthworms, and frozen or fresh seafood like prawns and white fish fillets.

Some Feeding Tips

Avoid feeding mammalian or avian meats (like beef heart or chicken), as their digestive systems cannot process these fats properly. Offering a diverse diet helps prevent nutritional deficiencies and keeps their colors vibrant.

Breeding

Breeding the Golden Arowana in a home aquarium is nearly impossible due to the immense space required for a pair to court and spawn. They are paternal mouthbrooders; the male carries the eggs and fry in his mouth for several weeks. Commercial breeding is typically conducted in large outdoor mud ponds in tropical climates.

Conclusion

The Golden Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum variant) is a magnificent, awe-inspiring fish that represents the pinnacle of monster fish keeping. While their golden scales and graceful swimming make them a mesmerizing pet, their demand for massive enclosures, heavy filtration, and a secure environment means they are a long-term commitment reserved only for the most dedicated and experienced aquarists.
