Haludaria fasciata (Glowing Coal Barb)

Overview

The Glowing Coal Barb (Haludaria fasciata), frequently referred to as the Melon Barb, is a robust and lively freshwater fish. Its brilliant coloration, resembling glowing embers, makes it a highly sought-after species for aquarists looking to add movement and vivid hues to their tanks. When kept in proper conditions, their colors intensify, creating a spectacular display.

Distribution and Habitat

This species is native to the Western Ghats region of southern India, predominantly found in the states of Kerala and Karnataka. They naturally inhabit flowing rivers, streams, and tributaries characterized by clear, well-oxygenated water. These environments are typically shaded by dense riparian vegetation and feature a substrate composed of sand, gravel, and smooth river rocks.

Description of Glowing Coal Barb

Body shape:

They possess a classic torpedo-shaped and laterally compressed body, which is highly typical of active, fast-swimming cyprinids.

Color:

The base coloration ranges from a silvery-pink to a deep, fiery reddish-orange. This vibrant background is overlaid with several prominent, irregular black vertical bars or blotches along their flanks.

Barbels:

Like many barbs, they possess small pairs of maxillary barbels near the mouth, which are used to help them forage for food in the substrate.

Snout:

The snout is slightly pointed, featuring a terminal mouth that is perfectly adapted for both mid-water and bottom feeding.

Eyes:

They have relatively large, alert eyes with a dark central pupil, often surrounded by a reddish or golden ring around the iris.

Fins:

The dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins generally exhibit a translucent reddish or yellowish tint, sometimes accented with darker edges or subtle iridescence.

The Tail:

The caudal fin is deeply forked, providing the propulsion needed for their swift and agile swimming capabilities.

Temper

The Glowing Coal Barb is generally a peaceful species. However, due to their high energy levels and rapid swimming, they can sometimes startle or outcompete very shy or slow-moving tank mates. They do best with fish of a similar activity level.

Sociality

They are highly gregarious schooling fish. It is crucial to keep them in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals. A proper school makes them feel secure, encourages their best coloration, and minimizes any potential fin-nipping tendencies.

Activity

These barbs are exceptionally active mid-level swimmers. They are constantly on the move, exploring the aquarium, playfully chasing one another, and foraging for food.

Keeping and Caring for Glowing Coal Barb

Tank size:

A minimum tank size of 20 to 30 gallons (75-115 liters) is recommended. This provides the necessary horizontal swimming space for a school to thrive.

Water Parameters:

Temperature

They prefer tropical temperatures ranging from 22-26°C (72-79°F).

pH

Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.5.

Hardness

Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, generally between 2-10 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept as low as possible, ideally below 20 ppm, through regular maintenance and water changes.

Lighting

Moderate lighting is best. If the lighting is too bright without adequate shade, their colors may wash out and they could become skittish.

Water flow

They appreciate a moderate to slightly strong water flow that mimics the currents of their natural riverine habitats.

Decorations and Plants

A setup featuring a dark substrate, driftwood, and smooth river rocks works beautifully. Dense plantings around the perimeter will provide hiding spots and make them feel secure, while leaving a large open swimming area in the center of the tank.

Diet

Glowing Coal Barbs are omnivorous and not fussy eaters. In the wild, they consume insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter. In the aquarium, they will readily accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and both frozen and live foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp.

Some Feeding Tips

Feed them small amounts 2 to 3 times a day, ensuring they consume it within a few minutes. Providing a varied diet that includes color-enhancing foods rich in carotenoids will help bring out their fiery reddish-pink colors.

Breeding

They are egg-scatterers that exhibit no parental care. To breed them, set up a separate spawning tank with dim lighting, soft, slightly acidic water, and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop. Condition the adults with plenty of live and frozen foods. Spawning usually occurs in the morning. After eggs are scattered, remove the parents immediately to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry will hatch in a few days and will initially require infusoria before graduating to freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.

Conclusion

The Glowing Coal Barb is an exceptional choice for aquarists seeking a hardy, active, and strikingly colored schooling fish. With the right setup, good water quality, and a proper group size, they will thrive and provide endless entertainment and beauty in a community aquarium.
